Trans-Canada Highways
Technically speaking, the Trans-Canada Highways are part of the PTH system in Manitoba. But they do have a special designation and role within the province. So they deserve their own page.
TCH 1
One of the longest highways in the province, TCH 1 is a major transport route. It is twinned for most of its length, and according to various news reports, should be completely twinned within the next ten years. It is also one of only two highways to pass through the City of Winnipeg (the other being PTH 59). While in Winnipeg, it is cosigned with various city route numbers.
Primary Orientation: East-West
Eastern Terminus: Highway 17, Ontario
Western Terminus: Highway 1, Saskatchewan
This route is signed as Trans-Canada for its entire length.
Spur Routes
1A: Portage La Prairie (1 skirts the city; 1A goes through its centre), Brandon (likewise)
TCH 16
TCH 16 is known as the Yellowhead Highway. It is a more northerly route across Western Canada, and is considered part of the TCH system.
Primary Orientation: East-West
Eastern Terminus: Highway 1, west of Portage La Prairie
Western Terminus: Highway 16, Saskatchewan
This route is signed Yellowhead/Trans-Canada for its entire length.
TCH 100
Half of the highway network forming the "Perimeter Highway" around Winnipeg, TCH 100 forms an alternate route around the southern end of Winnipeg for motorists wishing to follow the Trans-Canada but not desiring to drive through the heart of Winnipeg.
Primary Orientation: East-West
Eastern Terminus: TCH 1, east of Winnipeg at PTH 101
