Programming LanguagesFirstBasic Once upon a time, a long time ago, and in a land that seems so far away, I pretended to be a programmer. I worked on some games, and even finished one or two. They were written in BASIC, for Dos3.3 and CGA of all things. Ugh. To compile them, I used a piece of software called FirstBasic, available from this page.DarkBASIC I don't know what it is about BASIC that I love, but I seem to love it. DarkBASIC is a BASIC compiler with built in DirectX controls. Very cool. There's a shareware version, but it's limited. Much better if you can afford the full program. Borland One of the coolest things about Borland is that they have made all sorts of software available for free, including a bunch of old DOS compilers (C, C++, Pascal) and some newer stuff, too (C++ 5.5 for Win, Delphi 6). I have several of these software tools. Not that I'm proficient in them, but we can always dream... Authoring SoftwareAuthoring systems are a way of creating games without needing to learn the details of a programming language. DarkBASIC is about as close as a language can get to an authoring system. The following are true authoring systems.
Game Maker Mark Overmars is a CompSci prof in the Netherlands who has created and given to the world a very flexible 2-d game authoring system. If you don't believe me, check out some of the demos and downloadable games. GamesI would be remiss not to mention some of my favourite games, and how to find them on the web.
Clickomania! Easily one of the most addictive games ever made, Clickomania is too much fun, and should come with a warning. |
