An Aardie, the Sermon on the Mount, and painting progress

Yay, I’ve been given an Aardie! (Alex, how do I paste my Aardie up here?) [Alex says: Kind of like this! Aardie]
Confessing Evangelical has a great post over here, musing about the Sermon on the Mount. He starts off:

Many people seem to have a general feeling of benevolent warmth towards the sermon on the mount. You know the sort of thing: “I’m not the sort to go to church, but I do try to live by the sermon on the mount.” Most Christians, likewise, would probably regard the sermon on the mount as the template to which we should aspire in our own lives.

But that general hazy sense of the sermon on the mount as “great moral teaching”, practical guidance for the Good Life, soon disappears once you start to attend to what Jesus is actually saying.

Go read the whole thing!

Meanwhile, I’ve “finished” my deacon’s bench. (Meaning I’ve put it aside, unwilling to change the little things I’m still thinking of changing on it before I get other things done. But at least it’s entirely covered with a painted surface.) The bench is very… ostentatious. It looks good, I guess, but it’s like a firework went off in our dining area. It’s bright, primary colors with bold black outline. I wonder how the people in Morden who gave us that plain, unfinished bench for a wedding gift will feel when they see it now. ;) Also, I’m very close to already being done a stained glass-effect 16 x 20 painting, based in part on one of Durer’s altarpieces. I made this small “sketch” of it to take with us to BC on our trip, so I can show it to the pastor of the church to which I may be donating a larger version. If they don’t go for it, I’m planning on making up the larger painting anyway and donating it to the Morden church here. Ideally, it should be one of a three-part series, but we’ll see if that ever happens. Maybe I can put some pics up here on the blog soon…

  1. Mom:

Congrats on the Aardie, sweetie. You definitely are at the place and vocation you should be in. Pictures please, my binoculars don’t view from Maryland to Winkler(although I wish they could sometime so I could see you and Alex more)

    Love,

    Mom

  2. Effie:

Woohoo! An Aardie! What an honour, eh?!

I’m guessing that you wouldn’t want people to sit on the Deacon’s Bench, eh?! Or have you put a layer of shellac to seal in your design? Well, don’t be using shellac right now anyways!

How are you feeling? Email me!

I’m going to swat anyone who looks like they’re even *thinking* of sitting on this bench. However, it looks so much like a firework explosion went off, I think that alone will intimidate people and keep them away. ;)

We’re not going to varnish the bench until later, at least till after the show. I don’t want to have to leave it out in the garage for the fumes to escape, since it’s so cold and something might happen to the wood as it sits there shivering. We’re not offering it for sale, anyway, since it was originally a wedding gift and I’ve also personalized it with the name “Klages.”
