A Beggar At The Table

Compiling a Compilation

May 5th, 2006

Yet another random post from me this morning. Kelly and I were talking over the dishes last evening about a compilation of Beatles/Wings covers from unexpected sources. You know, like the Galactic Cowboys covering Junior’s Farm or PFR and Phil Keaggy doing We Can Work It Out.

So this got me thinking. For a long time I’ve been wanting to make a compilation of surprising and unexpected Christmas songs from decidedly non-Christmassy albums. Examples: The Serial Post Christmas Song by Lost And Found from their album We All Are, You Gotta Get Up by Rich Mullins from A Liturgy, A Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band, and Ice Storm by Annie from Sci-Fi Canon Blues.

I guess what I’m looking for is feedback from you, my regular and not-so-regular readers. What are examples of Christmas songs on non-Christmas albums? I’m going to continue digging through our CD collection of roughly 700 CDs and see what I can find.

Santa’s Beard, by They Might Be Giants. On the Lincoln album. Great song. And hey-ho to the Galactic Cowboys reference.

I heard one the other day, thought I’d pass it along to you. It’s not entirely a Christmas song, but it does mention Christmas in it! Peace on Earth by U2, on All That You Can’t Leave Behind.

    Night!

Good one, Naomi… and I don’t have that song in my collection, Mark, but I like the thought of a TMBG Christmas song (though aren’t they Jewish or something?)
